1. What is Backgammon?

Backgammon is a two-player strategy game played on a board with 24 triangles called points. Each player has 15 checkers, and movement is based on dice rolls. Players aim to move all their checkers into their home board and bear them off.

2. What is the Objective of Backgammon?

The goal is to be the first to bear off all 15 of your checkers from your home board.

3. How Do You Set Up the Backgammon Board?

Each player starts with 15 checkers arranged as follows:

  • 2 checkers on the opponent’s 24-point
  • 5 on the 13-point
  • 3 on the 8-point
  • 5 on the 6-point

Players move in opposite directions.

The board is split into 4 quadrants: your home board, outer board, and the same for the opponent.

4. How Do You Move the Checkers?

  • Players roll two dice and move checkers the number of points indicated.
  • You may split the dice between two checkers or use both numbers on one checker (if legal).
  • You cannot land on a point with two or more opposing checkers.
  • If you roll doubles, you get four moves instead of two.

5. What is Hitting in Backgammon?

If you land on a point occupied by a single opposing checker, you “hit” it and send it to the bar. That checker must re-enter the board through your home board before the opponent can make any other moves.

6. What is Bearing Off in Backgammon?

Once all your checkers are in your home board (points 1–6), you can begin bearing off by rolling dice and removing checkers from corresponding points. If no checker is on a rolled point, you may bear off from the next highest point.

7. How Do You Win a Game of Backgammon?

  • Standard Win: You bear off all checkers before the opponent does.
  • Gammon: You win before your opponent bears off any checkers – double points.
  • Backgammon: You win and the opponent still has checkers on the bar or in your home board – triple points.
